Otherwise there are manuals online that you can browse through, and home improvement stores near you may have workshops or professionals who will be able to show you how to do it yourself. If you are refinishing newly installed wooden flooring in your home, you may want to consider waiting until all construction in the house is complete. You don’t want traffic from the contractors to be tracking all over you newly finished wooden floor, or dust getting trapped in the sealant. If you are planning on refinishing wood floors that already exists in your home, you should remove all furniture, rugs, and drapes. If you plan on doing any painting or repairs to the walls or ceiling, do it before you do the floor. This will prevent any paint from spilling onto the newly finished floor. When you start refinishing wood floors, you will want to start by sanding down the wood using a drum or belt-sanding machine. You may also want to have a hand sand block available to use in case you need to sand into any corners that the machine is not able to reach. Prior to sanding you may want to remove the base shoe, which is the little lip at the bottom of the baseboard, this will make it easier for you to sand along the edges of the room. When you sand the floor, make sure that you are sanding with the grain of the wood, not against it, otherwise you will leave obvious sanding marks in the floor. Once the sanding is complete, sweep and remove any debris left behind from the sanding machine. It would be ideal to rent or purchase a machine that has a vacuum bag attached to it to prevent any dust from collecting in the room. It is advised that you start applying the protective coat, stain, and sealer immediately after sanding. When you are applying the protective coating or any other products to the floor make sure that you are wearing, and using, proper gear. Wear a mask and gloves to protect yourself. The last product to apply to the wood floor is the sealer. Depending on what type of product you use, you may have to wait 24 hours or more to allow the sealant time to dry. |
