Mesquite Flooring

Mesquite Flooring Natural Look

If you are looking for a gorgeous natural looking, sturdy and durable wooden flooring then one option to look into is flooring called mesquite flooring.  This is a type of flooring that is made from a dense and stable wood that won’t warp or split.  It is harder, and thicker, than most commercial flooring and will last longer than the more commonly selected types of flooring.  Because of its distinct color and grain it is increasingly becoming a more common choice among those who can afford it.

There are over sixty varieties of mesquite wood found throughout the world, majority of them found in the western parts of the United States and in Mexico.  Majority of the mesquite flooring is harvested and made in Texas and Arizona.  The wood grows quite well in the desert parts of the land, growing where there is an unpredictable supply of water, and it also grows quite quickly.  This makes it easy for farmers to grow and harvest mesquite as the trees need very little tending and will produce much quicker than most wood.  Mesquite does not shrink as it ages, making it a great choice for flooring.  When the wood is harvested it is then placed in a kiln to bring down the wood moisture level below ten percent, then the choice pieces are chosen and sorted into the type of wood grade and sold accordingly.

Because of the quality of mesquite flooring it can be an expensive option, but well worth it in the long run.  As the wood does not shrink as it ages, it is a great benefit to use as flooring as it will increase the durability and quality of the wood.  Mesquite floors will not warp like the common wood floors, such as oak or pine.

Mesquite flooring also has a distinct color and grain uncommon to other flooring options.  It has a natural, deep red cherry color and is typically sorted into two grades.  The most common, and expensive, grade is the select grade.  Mesquite flooring in select grade is a look of clear wood with very few tight knots and is typically sold in lengths of up to sixteen inches.  The other, less expensive, option is the rustic grade.  The rustic grade has several flaws in the wood such as wormholes, knots and mineral streaks.  These pieces are sold at a more reasonable price and can give your home a unique and rustic look.  However it is common for some to use both grades when installing their flooring, as it gives the floor a more natural look.

As this type of flooring is very durable it can easily be installed in areas in your home where there is heavy traffic, or it can be installed over radiant in-floor heating without fear of long-term damage to your flooring.  Although mesquite flooring is a more expensive option it will pay for itself with low maintenance upkeep and a life span uncommon to other types of flooring.
