Hard Wood Flooring Care and Maintenance

One of the most beautiful types of floor covering is hard wood flooring. With so many unique options, rich colors, patterns, and installation options, you can transform any room of your home into a gorgeous masterpiece. However, while hard wood flooring offers tremendous benefit such as strength, durability, and aesthetics, it also comes with special care to ensure it lasts. With this, you will enjoy a rich, beautiful room to last a lifetime.

The great thing with hardwood floors is that you can create a dramatic look with beautiful colors, patterns, textures, and styles. Whether choosing from cherry, maple, oak, walnut, bamboo, and others, your floors will look amazing. Just remember that hard wood flooring is an investment but worth every penny. Therefore, you want to do all you can to protect that investment, as you will see below:

· Dirt and Grime – Unfortunately, dirt and grime can damage the finish of the flooring, scratching it. To prevent damage and trap dirt and grime, use floor mats.
· Liquid Spills – Wet hard wood flooring can warp from liquid spills so in this case, wipe up the spill immediately
· Cleaners – When cleaning your hardwood floor, you want to avoid any type of oil soap, which can cause a buildup that damages the floor’s coat. The best option is a cleaner with a neutral pH, one formulated specifically for wood floors.
· Furniture – Moving furniture around on hardwood floors can cause scratches and dents.  Therefore, make sure all furniture is lifted from place to place and then has protection under all the legs.
· Dents – Never use a vacuum cleaner with a beater bar, which can dent and scratch the wood
· Sun – Be sure your hard wood flooring does not receive any direct sunlight, which can cause discoloration
· Cleaning – When cleaning your floors, use a simple soft bristle broom
· Vacuuming – You will find a number of vacuum cleaners on the market designed specifically for hardwood floors
· Dusting – For a good cleaning, you can use a 12 to 18-inch cotton head dust mop and dusting product made for hard wood flooring, spraying the product on the mop about 12 hours prior to using

Keep in mind that you will hear some people say you can damp mop hard wood floors while others say not to. In this case, if your flooring has a good surface, damp mopping with a little water will not penetrate the wood and therefore, not damage it. However, the key is having a good surface. Simply use a neutral pH wood cleaner and water, using a small amount of water and your hard wood flooring will look beautiful.
