Electric Radiant Floor Heat

Electric Radiant Floor Heat Overview

If you are looking for an energy saving heat source, then you may want to look into installing electric radiant floor heat within your home.  Electric radiant floor heat is an ideal installation if you wish to heat your home and save on your bills.  An electric radiant floor heat is a mat, like an electric blanket that is installed in your floor and allows heat to transfer properly within your home.  Heat from the electric radiant floor is transferred from the floor directly to your body and heats cold surfaces and objects rather than the air.  The rooms air temperature can be at a low temperature, however this will not affect you as the heat from the flooring will maintain your body at a constant level of warmth.

The electric radiant floor heat is made of a heat resistant wire that serpentines over a safe supporting fibreglass material, and looks similar to an electric blanket.  The wire is encased in a safe, fire resistant material.  This allows you the option of installing the radiant floor heat under carpet.  It can be installed between the carpet pad and the carpet itself allowing the floor to heat properly.  It can also be installed under floating wood, or tile.  It is easy to install, in fact it can become a do-it-yourself project if you have the time and the energy to do it.

Electric radiant floor heat is a lot easier to install when compared to a hydronic system.  A hydronic system is a floor heating system that has tubing under the flooring that is filled with hot water to evenly distribute the heat throughout the house.  With the hydronic system, it may take longer to heat up when compared to electric radiant floor heat.  It will also have to be done by a professional.

If your home is being built or is undergoing a big renovation, you may want to consider getting a price quote for both options of floor heating.  However, if you wish to install floor heating in your existing home without having to undergo major renovations, the electric radiant heat flooring my be your cheapest, and easiest option.  It can easily be installed over the current flooring, as long as the floor is structurally sound, level, and free of any debris.  The electric flooring is then laid on the floor and covered with a thin layer of cement.  When the cement is set you can then lay your tile or your wood flooring.  If you are installing it in a carpeted area, it can easily be installed between the pad and the carpet.  Some companies can sell the electric heat flooring in custom sizes that can fit your room, or you can purchase a size that is suitable for the room you wish to install it in, it does not necessarily have to be a wall-to-wall installation, however it would be ideal.  During installation you will also want to ensure that the doors and windows are properly insulated as this will also help reduce the cost of heating.
