Often, we pull into the garage and never think twice about what all is being brought in with the tires – for this reason, garage floor coatings have become a popular trend. In fact, this type of coating is much more than a simple trend. Saving the garage floor from permanent damage, not just from dirt and grime but also spilled chemicals, paint, and other common things found in the garage.
The cost to repair or pour a new garage can be extremely expensive. Therefore, it is easier to use quality, garage floor coatings as a preventative measure. This means that once the epoxy dries, you have a garage floor that is moisture resistant, stain resistant, and almost maintenance free. In addition to the protection, these garage floor coatings also improve the overall appearance of the floor. The thing to remember with any garage floor coatings is that you need to first prepare the floor. For instance, with epoxy, the floor needs to be clean, free from any old paint, and moisture free. Then, be sure any finishing or cement sealer has been stripped prior to applying the epoxy. Since moisture is one of the most important aspects before using garage floor coatings, you can use a plain piece of plastic, taping it down to a 3x3-foot area. In about three days, check the plastic. If there is condensation then this type of coating is not the right choice since it would never be able to bond. The same is true for checking the presence of sealant and oil. With a cup of water, pour it onto the garage floor. In about 20 to 30 minutes, the water should absorb. However, if you notice the water not absorbing or beginning to bead, then you know some type of oil or sealant is on the floor. Again, garage floor coatings such as epoxy would not work well. Although it takes a little bit of preparedness when coating a garage floor, this process is worth it. After all, you want a beautiful floor, one that will be protected for many years to come.
