Although having a painted garage floor was unheard of years ago, today we see many people turning to various solutions of protection to include epoxy paint for the garage floor. Considering that the garage receives the brunt of dirt, chemicals, cleaners, oil, and other substances, it only makes sense that it should be protected. After all, the cost of redoing a garage floor is high. By using something such as epoxy paint for the garage floor, you can protect your floor while enhancing the overall appearance.
Instead of using your garage solely for parking the garage and storing “things”, you can actually make this more like another room of the house. Keep in mind that in addition to protecting the floor and making the garage look nicer, epoxy paint provides protection against slips as the result of spills of oil, water, antifreeze, etc. The nice aspect of using epoxy paint on the garage floor is that usually, one coat will do the job. With epoxy paint involving a layer of sealant and protection, you will discover the flooring resists problems with moisture and stains. Another positive aspect of epoxy paint for the garage floor is that you could do the application yourself. Although you could hire a professional to do the job for you, this makes a great weekend do-it-yourself project with great results. The most important part of the process is to make sure the floor is clean. This means removing any residual paint, oil, moisture, and so on. That way, the epoxy paint on the garage floor will adhere much better. If you were unsure about moisture, you can use a piece of plastic, covering a three by three foot section. With masking tape, secure all four sides of the plastic. Then, leave the plastic in place for about three days at which time it would be removed. If you notice moisture on the underside of the plastic, then you know the floor has a moisture problem. Unfortunately, chances are the epoxy paint on the garage floor would not work in this situation but remember there are other solutions to consider. Another important consideration is whether your garage floor has any type of sealant or oil on it. For this, you can fill a cup of water and then pour it on the floor. If there is no sealant or oil, the water should absorb within a day or so. However, if you find the water not absorbing or beading, then the floor is contaminated. Again, epoxy paint on the garage floor would not work well in this case. However, if you want to protect your floor and make the garage look better, you might use special tiles. If your garage floor were suitable for an epoxy application, then you would need to remove everything off the floor and park the cars outside. With the garage door or windows open for ventilation, you would begin applying the epoxy on the backend of the garage, working your way toward the front. The result of the epoxy paint on the garage floor will look great while providing you with many more years of a strong, durable surface. |
